CPIM, CPSM what’s the difference


CPIM

The APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) Credential provides you with the ability to understand and evaluate production and inventory activities within a company’s global operations. The CPIM program consists of 5 modules providing you with a solid, professional-level understanding of the entire manufacturing field.

The courses are designed to help you develop your knowledge and skills in the essential areas of materials management. Completion of each course requires approximately 25 to 30 hours of online study for a total of 100-150 hours. Once you are CPIM Credentialed, you are required to recertify every five years.

Modules of CPIM:

BSCM: Basics of Supply Chain Management

As part of the five-exam CPIM credential, Module One will explore the basic concepts of managing the flow of materials in a supply chain. In the Basics you get a complete overview of material flow, from internal and external suppliers, to and from your organization based on six subject areas: Elements of the Supply Chain, JIT/LEAN, Total Quality Management (TQM), Manufacturing Resources Planning (MRP II), Demand Planning and Capacity Management.

MPR: Master Planning of Resources

As part of the five-exam CPIM credential, Module Two will explore processes used to develop sales and operations plans and learn to identify and assess internal and external demand and forecasting requirements. The course focuses on the importance of producing achievable master schedules that are consistent with business policies, objectives, and resource constraints.based on four subject areas: Demand Management, Sales and Operations Planning, Master Scheduling and Measuring the Business Plan.

DSP: Detailed Scheduling and Planning – Approx. 30 Hours

As part of the five-exam CPIM credential, Module Three will focus on the various techniques for material and capacity scheduling. The course includes detailed descriptions of material requirements planning (MRP), capacity requirements planning (CRP), inventory management practices, and procurement and supplier planning based on the four subject areas: Recognizing Techniques and Tactics of Inventory Management, Mechanics of the Detailed Material Planning Process, Planning Operations to Support the Priority Plan and Planning Procurement and External Sources of Supply.

ECO: Execution and Control of Operations

As part of the five-exam CPIM credential, Module Four will focus on the areas of prioritizing and sequencing work, executing work plans and implementing controls, reporting activity results, and providing feedback on performance. The course explains techniques for scheduling and controlling production processes, the execution of quality initiatives and continuous improvement plans, and the control and handling of inventories based on four subject areas: Prioritizing and Sequencing Work, Executing Plans and Implementing Controls, Authoring and Reporting Activities for Push and Pull Systems and Evaluating Performance and Providing Feedback.

SMR: Strategic Management of Resources

As part of the five-exam CPIM credential, Module Five will explore the relationship of existing and emerging processes and technologies to manufacturing strategy and supply chain-related functions. The course addresses three main topics: aligning resources with the strategic plan, configuring and integrating operating processes to support the strategic plan, and implementing change and is based on four subject areas: Competitive Market Issues, Choices Affecting Facilities, Supply Chain, Information Technology, and Organizational Design, Configuring and Integrating Internal Processes and Evaluating and Managing Projects.

CPSM

The Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) is recognized globally as a standard of excellence for professionals in procurement, supply management and supply chain management. The CPSM program consists of 3 modules that reflects the expanded knowledge, skills and abilities required to be a successful professional. Current evolution of the profession dictates that a strategic level certification is needed for professionals to effectively implement innovative supply chain strategies throughout their entire organization.

Timeframes vary based upon candidates’ study program. For those who are self-paced learners, the average is approximately 6 – 12 months to completion, depending on experience and time available to study. Once you are CPSM Credentialled, you are required to recertify every three years.

As part of the three-exam CPSM credential, Module One will focus on six subject areas: contracting and negotiations, cost and finance, international sourcing, social responsibility, sourcing, and supplier relationship management.

CPSM Module Two Review: Effective Supply Management Performance
As part of the three-exam CPSM credential, Module Two will focus on eight subject areas: forecasting, logistics, materials and inventory management, organizational/departmental assessment, planning, product/service development, project management and supplier quality.
